Fabulous Friday - Author Visit

This morning the students completed the Friday section of the vocabulary sheet for our word of the week, fortunate.  Then they chose the academic skill they wanted to practice since it is Free Choice Friday.  After watching the announcements, we went to an assembly.

Dave Roman, a published author and illustrator, visited our school and shared his passion for reading, writing, and art.  We all enjoyed the wonderful presentation!

When we returned to class, we explored Mr. Romanś web site and began reading his online comic book.

Then, the children enjoyed lunch and indoor recess.

After recess, Mr. Sarisohn was here, as I had to go back to the oral surgeon for a post-op check up.

First, the students had a writing lesson where they learned about using the modal auxiliaries can, must, and may, in functional writing.  Next, they reviewed the various structures for informational text.  After that, they worked independently to identify the text structure for various informational passages.  They also had time to finish up work from earlier in the week.  This included the week 4 formative comparing the point of view and perspective of two texts about the same topic, writing an opinion paragraph about whether they preferred the novel or the movie of Shiloh, and the Flocabulary assignment about the 3 branches of government.

The children ended their day in math.  My math class began with a warm up and then they reviewed the homework from Wednesday night.  After that, they took a formative covering the addition and subtraction of fractions and mixed numbers with unlike denominators.  I will grade and return these on MONDAY.  Finally, they completed a session of Xtra math and used online games to practice adding and subtracting fractions and mixed numbers with unlike denominators.

Have a great weekend!
