Terrific Tuesday

This morning the students completed the Tuesday section of the vocabulary sheet for the word of the week, utilize.  Then, they practiced their keyboarding skills using Typing Club.  After the announcements, we switched for math.

Math began with  a warm up involving multiplication, division, and logic.  Then, we reviewed the homework from last night.  After that, we began our rotations.

During the small group lesson we practiced calculating the volume of composed solids.  During math with a partner, the students continued working on their Volume Citiy.  Finally, during the technology portion, the students completed a session of Xtra Math and then worked on their Volume City.

Today was the final day to complete the Volume City.

In between the scond and third rotations, the children  enjoyed lunch and indoor recess.

Math homework is posted in GC.

After math we began our literacy block with a reading lesson.  We read chapters 30, 31, 32, and 33 of WTMMTM and practiced Stop*Think*Paraphrase.  Then, we summarized the 4 chapters using 6 sentences.

After that, we had a writing lesson.  We examined 3 excerpts from books we read earlier in this unit and identified and discussed ways the author used punctuation for effect.  The techniques included using exclamation marks, writing in short choppy sentences, using repeated periods, and the use of parenthesis.  Then the students ate snack and worked with their writing partner to revise their writing to add punctuation for effect.  FInally, several students shared the changes they made to improve their writing.

Next, the students worked independently on several assignments while I met with individual students to complete the bi-monthly informal reading assessments.

First, the children completed the Tuesday section of the writing skills practice sheet.  Next, they watched the screen cast for the correct punctuation of dialogue and completed a second follow up worksheet.  After that, they worked on the summative worksheet identifying and describing the major systems of the Earth.  Finally, the children continued revising and editing their fictional piece.

The students ended their day in art with Mrs. Daniell.
