Math began with a missing number, logic-based warm up. Then, we reviewed the homework from last night. Next, we began our rotations.
During the small group instruction we solved word problems involving the volume of rectangular prisms. During math with a partner, the students began constructing a city using centimeter grid paper to create rectangular prism shaped buildings. Then they measure the dimnesions of each building and calculated its volume. Finally, during the technology portion, the students complted a session of Xtra Math and then continued working on their Volume City
In between the second and third rotations, the students enjoyed lunch and outdoor recess.
Math homework is posted in GC and we will have a formative tomorrow covering volume.
After math we began our literacy block. We reviewed the difference between first and third person point of view and then proceeded to read chapters 20, 21, and 22 of Where the Mountain Meets the Moon.
THen the students went to music with Mrs. Graf.
When they returned to class they ate snack and worked on their indepdent assignments. First, they completed the Thursday section of the reading skills practice sheet. Next they used the graphic organizer from Tuesday to write a summary of the Paper of Happiness, from WTMMTM. After that, the children reread pages 105-109 in WTMMTM and identified and explained 3 similes or metaphors. Then, they completed a practice sheet identifying singular, plural, and possesive nouns, using the screen cast, if needed. Those who had time worked on typing and revising their fiction writing piece.
As the students worked, I met with individual students to continue the bi-monthly informal reading testing.
The students ended their day with a PBIS school-wide celebration. To celebrate making good choices at recess, they enjoyed a Game Day afternoon, filled with board games and card games. It was great to watch the lively interaction without electronics!!

During the small group lesson we used used strategies to calculate the volume of rectangular prisms. Durrng math with a partner, the students played a different Around the World Bump boardgame that helped the children practice calculating the volume of a rectangular prism using V= LXWXH. Finally, during the technology portion, the students completed a session of Xtra Math and then chose an online site to practice calculating the volume of a solid.
In between the second and third rotations the students enjoyed lunch and recess.
Math homework is posted in GC.
After math, we began our literacy block. We started by reviewing similes and metaphors. Then we read chapters 17, 18, and 19, identifying siomiles and metaphors along the way. For each, we added it to a class chart, determined what two things were being compared, and explained the interpretation.
Then we took a Go Noodle brain break.

During the small group instruction we used various strategies to determine the volume of a rectangular prism. During math with a parnter, the students played an Aroudn the Block Bump board game to practice identifying the volume of a solid. Finally, during the technology rotation, the children completed a session of Xtra Math. Then, they completed a couple of problems using the Cubes web site. Finally, they played Shape Shoot volume to practice identifying solids with a given volume.
Inb between the second and third rotations, the students enjoyed lunch and outdoor recess.

After math, we began our literacy block. We started by reviewing similes and metpahors. Then we identified and explained several, as we continued reading the novel, Where the Mountain Meets the Moon.
After that, we used self-assessment questions to analyze our fiuction writing pieces, ensuring that we have either included all of the necessary componeents OR marked places we need to revise. Next, the students met with their writing partners and asked eachother the questions.

Thrilling Thursday - Surprise Guest Reader
This morning the students completed the Thursday section of the vocabulary sheet for our word of the week, represent. Then, they tried to solve the puzzles for this week. After the announcements, we switched for math.
Math began with a magic square warm up. Then, we went over the homework from last night. Next, we began our rotations.
During the small group lesson we practiced estimating and finding the product of multi-digit whole numbers, but today we focused on choosing the most efficient strategy. During math with a partner, the students played a board game of Snakes to practice multiplying multi-digit whole numbers. Finally, during the technology portion, the students completed a session of Xtra Math and then chose a game from the Multi-Digit Multiplication Live Binder to practice that skill.
In between the second and third rotations, the students enjoyed lunch and indoor recess.
Math homework is posted in GC. We will have a formative tomorrow covering multiplication of multi-digit whole numbers suing the standard algorithm.
After math, we began our literacy block with a writing lesson. First, we reviewed that adjectives are words that modify nouns and practiced generating some. Then, we reread a passage from the story, Morning on the Lake, and identified adjectives, and the nouns they modify. After that, the students worked silently to find places they used, or could use, adjectives to describe nouns in their stories. Then, a few volunteers shared their favorite sentences that had adjectives modifying nouns.
Next, the students went ot music with MRs. Graf.
When they returned to class, the children ate snack while I reviewed the Stop*Think*Paraphrase strategy for summarizing. Then, we read chapters 7, 8, and 9 of WTMMTM and practiced using te strategy.
Unfortunately, we began to run out of time. So, the students had a few minutes to work on the Thursday section of the reading skills page and write a pargraph about a character trait they could infer about Minli, using two pieces of evidence fro mthe novel to support it.
The day ended with a guest reader. My mommy came to read, The Butter Battle Book, by Dr. Seuss, to the class.
