Fabulous Friday

This morning the students completed the Friday portion of the vocabulary sheet for our word of the week, annual.  Then, they chose which academic skill to practice since it is Free Choice Friday.  After watching the announcements, we switched for math.

Math began with a warm up focusing on the classification of quadrilaterals.  Then, we went over last night's homework.  Next, we played several Kahoots to reinforce and practice using characteristics of sides and angles to classify quadrilaterals.

Then, the students enjoyed lunch and outdoor recess.

After recess, the students completed a session of Xtra Math and then we finished the quadrilaterals Kahoot.

Once we switched back to homerooms, we reviewed the word of the week and our weekly puzzles.  Then, we began our literacy block with a writing lesson.  We read a poem comparing a cow to a mountain and discussed how poets use similes to paint a picture in the reader's mind.  Then, we created a class list of similes comparing the movement of an animal to something unrelated.  After that, the students wrote poems, including at least one simile comparing the movement of an animal.  Finally, volunteers shared their writing.

After writing, we reviewed the difference between first and second hand accounts of an event or topic and focused on the characteristics of each.  Then, while I met with guided reading groups, the students worked independently.

First, they read two accounts of the astronauts landing on the moon and identified which was a first hand account and which was second.  Then, they identified how the two articles were similar and different.  After that, they caught up with their book club assignments and met in groups.  Next, the students re-watched the commas in letters screen cast and completed a graded practice sheet.  Finally, they used the many links available in GC - Social Studies to complete an open note quiz about the 13 Colonies.

I met with all 3 reading groups.  In each group we...

identified what was the same about both accounts and what was different.  Then, I modeled and "thought out loud" as I drafter a 2 paragraph written response comparing and contrasting the two texts about astronauts landing on the moon.  Finally, each students shared one new thing they learned in group today.
