This morning the students completed the Thursday portion of the vocabulary sheet for our word of the week, temporary. Then, they looked at our weekly puzzles and posted their guesses in the comment section. After the announcements, we switched for math.
Today's math block was shortened due to PARCC testing AND we had many students missing due to strings practice.
We did begin with a warm up involving adding and subtracting mixed numbers using a number line. Then, we reviewed last night's homework. After that, I introduced and modeled a game called Fraction Arrangements. The students choose five number cards and then use four of them to create 2 fractions that when computed gets close to a target amount. This involved many important skills including mental computation of fractions, creating equivalent fractions to add or subtract fractions, comparing fractions to target numbers, and reasoning.
After math, the children enjoyed lunch and outdoor recess.
When the children returned from recess we took the second part of the reading/language arts PAARC. Once everyone was done, they ate snack.
Next, they went to music.
After music we finished reading Shiloh. Then we had a special treat. A first grader, one of our classmate's brother, came and read the book, Don't Let the Pigeon Stay Up Late!, to us.
